Next time it happens try the SysReq keys:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key#Uses

Wait about 5 seconds between each key combo.  If it shuts down then the
kernel is still functioning (IOW, it's not a hard freeze) and problem is
X.org, probably a video driver bug.
