In the command line of a working Linux or using a Linux Live CD/DVD, type "md5sum
filename" after the prompt (don't type the quotes). For example:
$ md5sum somelinuxdistro.iso

the man and info commands usually provide useful information. Ex:
$ man md5sum

According to one of the reviewers on the site you need a running copy of
Ubuntu in order to use this software.

An *.iso is a special type of container file, usually for installing on CD, DVD,
that holds other files within it. An analogy would be .zip, .rar., .tar, etc.
You can't just copy it to your bootable target device; you have to use specific
software or commands. For example in xfburn:
" burn iso to disc "

This link below lists some methods for creating bootable USB devices. Good luck.
