Sorry for the extra message: you can of course create a bootable USB stick and run Ubuntu without unetbootin mentioned in my last message (see http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/try-ubuntu-before-you-install) but the wubi.exe is the windows installer (not for a live USB trial and newer windows machines will not accept wubi.exe; you have to download a 64-bit Ubuntu: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/install-ubuntu-with-windows

The wubi.exe file is your Windows installer and won't open on Ubuntu--it looks like the Ubuntu machine is interpreting it as a possible zip file or unknown file. If you put your USB key into a Windows machine to install Ubuntu, what happens?

BTW, this is not a "start-up" USB key, like a live distro on a stick where you can just start up Ubuntu on any computer and then turn if off and it is a Windows computer again. wubi.exe is an installer program (see: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer) You could run an .iso with a VM (forgive me if I have the term wrong but I did this a few years ago). Do you want http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ so that you can have a live Ubuntu distro on a stick? That won't use wubi.exe but will maybe do what you want.

When making Start up USB I got the message "Failed to install boot
loader". I am thinking this is why I have been unable to do an install
on my labtop. What do I need to do to make a working start up USB
stick?

I am using a Dell Ispiron 530 with Ububtu 12.04 to creat the start up USB and following the directions at: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...n/FromUSBStick

When I looked at what got saved on the USB stick their are 9 folders, 3
sheet icons, and one icon with gears labled wubi.exe. I clicked on the
wubi.exe icon and the following came up in an "Archive Mannager" box:
