I have a Compaq Evo 800n (circa 2005) now dualbooting XP and Xubuntu. I love how Xubuntu lives comfortably in 5 Gb, but I'm about ready to give it the rest of the drive and kill XP. <br><br>The real test was giving the machine to my wife, who can read Webmail and that's about it. Once she understood the analog for the Start button and how to find the applications, she ignored the platform entirely -- she was comfortable. As a bonus, Skype and our Logitech Webcam work even better on Xubuntu.<br></div><div aria-label="Compose body"><br></div><div aria-label="Compose body">Alan Benard<br></div><div aria-label="Compose body">WCC '11<br></div><div aria-label="Compose body">BPI Information Systems, Inc. <br></div><div><br></div><hr id="zwchr"><div style="color:#000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;font-size:12pt;" data-mce-style="color: #000; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; text-decoration: none; font-family: Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"><b>From: </b>"Jim Irrer" <irrer@umich.edu><br><b>To: </b>"Washtenaw Linux Users Group (WLUG)" <washlug@washlug.org><br><b>Sent: </b>Wednesday, April 9, 2014 12:16:51 PM<br><b>Subject: </b>Re: [WLUG] The End of XP an Opportunity for Linux?<br><div><br></div><div dir="ltr"><span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px" data-mce-style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">On some older personal computers I've gone with</span><div style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px" data-mce-style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Xubuntu because of it's smaller memory footprint.</div><div style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px" data-mce-style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">You still get the benefits of the Ubuntu community.</div><div style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px" data-mce-style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br></div><div style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px" data-mce-style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">I've heard of RDP programs that allow users to</div><div style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px" data-mce-style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">access Windows from Linux clients, but I've never</div><div style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px" data-mce-style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">used them.</div><div style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px" data-mce-style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br></div><div style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px" data-mce-style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">If all they do is RDP then it sounds like a good idea.</div><div style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px" data-mce-style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Get one working first and then duplicate that effort on</div><div style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px" data-mce-style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">the rest.</div><div><br></div><div style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px" data-mce-style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br></div></div><div class="gmail_extra"><br clear="all"><div><div dir="ltr">Thanks,<br><div><br></div>- Jim<br><div><br></div>Jim Irrer <a href="mailto:irrer@umich.edu" target="_blank" data-mce-href="mailto:irrer@umich.edu">irrer@umich.edu</a> (734) 647-4409<br>University of Michigan Hospital Radiation Oncology<br> 519 W.
