[WLUG] Should I switch to Ubuntu?

Hi,
  I'd try one of the Ubuntu Live disks first and make sure that
all the hardware is happy with it before wiping the Win 8.1 partition.

  Maybe install on a separate partition to test.
  
  If the laptop is still under warranty, you may need to leave Windows 
on it to get any repair done.
